Seeking blackening of stainless steel (304
or 316) component [California]
May 6, 2008
I am looking to blacken a piece of 316 or 304 stainless steel
which is approximately 13.5 x 3.5 x 0.25 inches. I am specifically
looking for a sodium dichromate treatment. This webpage
www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=1142 states that "blackening to
produce a non-reflective black oxide surface can be accomplished by
several methods. Immersion in sulphuric acid/potassium dichromate
solutions at 80 to 99°C or immersion in a molten salt bath of
sodium dichromate at 400°C are two common methods."
Shipping the piece anywhere in the US is not a problem.
