Cyanide spot-test reagents [Scotland]

March 7, 2008

are there any solutions/reagents that can be applied to a silver plated component to spot-check for cyanide residues on the surface of the metal after plating?

Sure. Wash whatever it is with a small volume of 0.1 N NaOH solution, then spot test the liquid with a Hach "Cyaniver" chemistry kit, or pyridine/barbituric acid reagent.

If you are having a problem with cyanide in your wastewater and you're not using any cyanide, and are thinking that it is coming in on parts from your supplier, good luck; but every time, without exception, that I have conducted such a test I have gotten a dead negative result.
