Need ABS models plated [Colorado]

February 26, 2008

We are looking to have an electrically conductive coating applied to an assembly of rapid prototype models. The intent is to replicate the radar signature of metallic parts. We will build these parts out of ABS and/or Poly Carbonate.
Before having the entire assembly coated, we would like to create a few test specimens:
8"x8"x.25" copper coated ABS
8"x8"x.25" copper coated Ploy Carb
8"x8"x.25" nickel coated ABS
8"x8"x.25" nickel coated Ploy Carb
8"x8"x.25" copper coated then nickel coated ABS
8"x8"x.25" copper coated then nickel coated Ploy Carb
Additionally, I would like to have a few small double lap shear specimens, approx qty 12 approx size 1"x2"x.125", for each of the six plating options.
Could you please provide us with a cost estimate for this job?
The program has limited budget on this project. If you could, please provide me with an additional estimate to plate a single 8"x8"x.25" specimen as a lower cost alternative. Please provide cost if this were done in copper, nickel or copper-nickel.

Also, these test specimens are not flight hardware and do not have to comply with the relevant specifications, such as AMS-C-26074B and MIL-P-47226. However, I urge you to process them in manner identical to these or other relevant specs, as the data collected here may be used as initial validation of this plating for flight use.

Also, so we have an idea of what the assembly will cost plated, please work up a Rough Order of Magnitude cost for plating 20 to 30 parts that are each smaller than a breadbox. Copper-nickel preferred. Copper alone is acceptable.

I run a rapid prototype machine here in the mechanical engineering department of a space systems Company in Denver. We are looking to develop a relationship with a plater to have parts plated from time to time for various programs that use our services. While our programs' budgets may oftentimes be small, we might make up for it in frequency. Please keep this in mind when bidding.
