Galvanic Corrosion

+++++++

I'm a senior and in my chemistry class we have a project that has to do with the corrosion of the Statue of Liberty. We also have to explain a solution that could prevent future corrosion. I understand the cause of the Galvanic corrosion, but what could be a possible solution to preventing the corrosion between the copper and iron in the Statue of Liberty?

Please describe the cause as you understand it, Christine, and I will then propose a possible solution to counter that cause. That way we will both learn something here.
