Hariline finish on flat stainless steel sheet components [India]

August 5, 2007

Hello,
we are in the manufacturing of stainless steel sheet metal components. our components are L-shaped sizes ranging from 6 to 18 inches in length and approx. 3"breadth and 1/2" high. Till now we are using manual hand operations for polishing the products which includes the following operations: Scratch removal with emery sticked leather wheels and then finishing with non-woven wheels and final finish with combi wheels. Now, problem is in scratch removal process which does not give constant finish each time.

Can you please suggest any better method for hairline finishing of such type of components or any alternate of emery sticked leather wheels or any automation possible. Our job is a production job so time play an important role plus the alternate should be cost effective.

If you have a lot of volume, it might be advisable to semi- automate. Meaning your process sounds good, but to create uniformity, you might want to fixture or make a pass though non-woven wheel system to create constant pressure and/or metal removal.
