Nitriding 1144 steel shafts

My name is Terry Simmons. I have done a fair amount of work in the dry ice business and have had a problem with chrome plated shafts. I peel the chrome off the shaft. These shafts are submitted to temperatures of -100 degrees F. I have tried several so called nitrited shafts with some success. I would like to understand the nitriting process a little better. Corrosion is a problem because the dry ice reacts with the moisture in the air to form carbonic acid. Questions: Does the nitriting process increase the hardness of the metal alloy of the shaft? Is the nitriting process a good inhibitor for corrosion? Thank You!

Dear Mr.Terry,

You see plasmaion nitriding will increase only the case depth .It is only a case hardening process,and it is a good corrosion inhibitor.

And you may go for some corrosion resistance hard coatings .
