Home brewed gun part coating?
++++++
For years I have been mixing powdered black Manganeese Dioxide,
that I get from a fire works exhibitor, with Phosphoric acid in
distilled water and adding a little
Steel Wool [link is to product info at Rockler], heat to about
200 F, place freshly bead blasted steel parts in this mix for 15
minutes. The parts are washed off in clear water, dried and oiled.
Parts are dark gray(near black),look good and wear well. The solution
can be used over several times with good results.
Question: What is the coating I am getting ? Any comment on safety or
anything I should know about this proceedure ?

Your solution is some kind of do it yourself phosphating solution.
Try to avoid direct contact with solution. Hope it helps and good
luck!
