Coating a corroded aluminum radar
arch
-
I recently bought a boat from Florida that has a painted aluminum
radar arch that has corroded everywhere the paint has been
compromised by a stainless fastener. What can I use to remove the
corrosion completely. Is there somewhere to have it dipped in a
solution in my area? It is quite large, 5' high by 10' wide and 10"
cross section. Thanks

Hi, Dennis. Ideally this radar arch should be anodized, but that
may be impractical if it's all assembled and welded together, and is
impossible if steel or stainless steel items are attached. Second
best would be chromate conversion coating.
The plating shop may dip it halfway at a time, or do some touch up
with a brush. After having it painted, don't attach stainless steel
in an electrically conductive way. Good luck.
