Aluminum basket in stainless steel stock pot [Texas]

January 13, 2006

Will the use of an aluminum perforated pasta strainer basket in a stainless steel stock pot, used with boiling salted tap water, cause a metal interaction problem? Thank you.

Well, there's a simple, practical, thought-provoking question. Certainly all of the requirements for significant galvanic corrosion have been met. I suspect that the only reason it's a minor problem instead of a serious one is the few hours per year where the corrosion situation exists, and the fact that such strainers tend to be inexpensive almost disposable items.
