Name for dipping red hot steel in oil
+++++
What name is given to the process, where u heat the steel to a cherry red and then dip the heated object in engine oil. I have used this many times in the workshop, at university as it gives a black finish that does not corrode. I was just wondering if any one could tell me the technical name for this process as I am doing a project and need to name the above process.
Many Thanks

Robert,
The name I'd use is VERGLUEHEN (VERGLÜHEN) ... Normally the 'U' is or has an umlaut, the twin dots over it instead of 'ue'.
It is an annealing process, is it not.
By the way, back in l922-ish, my grandfather, a naval architect, was responsible for upgrading the Victory and seeing that you are a Pompey-ite, I thought you'd be interested.

For steel, it is a hardening process. Annealing is holding the part at an appropriate temperature, like 400F, for a given period and letting the temperature coast down,

How about "oil quench".

It is called oil blackening and is often used when treating gun barrels to give the blueish look due to the type of oil used.

I think the process is called tempering.Tempering has two stages , Fistly the material is heated above a critical temperature then cooled rapidly (quenched) to freeze the material in a hardend state,Then the material is heated to a lower temperature to refine the grain structure to give hardness suitable for the job intended
