Refinishing a tin bread box with embossed black letters

+++++

I recently purchased an old tin bread box. I was able to clean it up fairly well but it has raised letters that spell B-R-E-A-D that are black. That black color does not come off - it is somehow IN the tin. My question is how to paint around those letters. I'd like to paint it a bright red as I think it once was, but I am so unsure of the black letters. I'd like to keep the integrity of the letters but don't know how.

Any ideas?
