How to mask a surface before powder coating

+++++

We are engaged in sheet metal fabrication. Several times we encountered parts that need to be powder coated only on the outer surface or some portions of the part. Overspray is not permitted. Currently, we are using old newspapers to mask surfaces which need not be painted. Is that right? How to do pretreatment when there are papers attached to the parts?

Thanks.

There are lot of masking tapes available in India. We are using laminated busbars with powder coating. Where the busbar joints are there we use masking tape on that portion to cover it. After powder coating process we remove this tape and wash the busbar with petrol and Isopropyl Alcohol [linked by editor to product info at Amazon] solution. This serves our purpose. You can also inquire for some of the paper based tapes which can withstand oven temperature required for powder coating.

I think you should choose maskant based on the following thing: the quantity of your product.
If you are mass production,the following method will help you.
The one,you can use removable adhesive before spraying powder(after pretreatment),you may take off the removable adhesive before baking or after baking.
The other, you can use iron board(you should design according your product)before spraying powder(after pretreatment),you should take off the iron board before baking. Or else, the powder on iron board will be difficult to removed after baking.
