Plating of Spanker Tip for Soft Solder

+++++

I am sourcing of a new vendor that can do a spanker tip for soft solder die attach which can stand at 350 to 420 deg. C. Currently we are getting from Europe and the lead time delivery is about 2 months before it reached ASIA.

One of a company located in ASIA tried to make it but the outcome is we cannot dispense the solder smoothly and the solder sometimes stocks on the surface of the spanker. Is there any coating material that can stand at high temperature and will not deluted? We are using PbSn1Ag1.5 solder wire. Any feedback or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hello, Aquino. Your posting is somewhat strange, if I'm understanding it, because it implies that your company is playing a passive role in the design of the product, asking the plating shop to plate the tip with something, anything, that will dispense solder smoothly.

A lot of work has been done on the development of plating specifications for solder tips, which usually involve both iron plating and chrome plating, and I think you need to start with development of a plating specification, either from the published literature or with the aid of a plating consultant. Good luck.

Have you tried a DLC coating for the spanker tip or nitrided tip?

You may want to consider also a high chrome steel base material with the tip coated with DLC or nitrided.

Conern DLC working temperature (>200C) for this application.
Maybe it life time is seveal hours or few days.
Question:
About Nitride, what's based materil, stainless steel or other steel?
Is oxide surface layer needed or not for nitride treatment?

Suggestion:
PTFE deposition or Cr or Ti plating
