Calculating Fume Generation at Pickling Process

++++

Dear Sir,

I like to Know how to calculation the Quantity of Fume Generation in Pickling tank while the stainless strip is running at 35 MPM. The tank is having HNO3/HF (Mixed Acid.

Thanking you.

Hi Manish !

I'm sure that India has some info on determing airflow rates for various chemicals ... in the USA there's an excellent book, called INDUSTRIAL VENTILATION (a manual of recommended practice) which gives a very good insight into calculating airflows, fumehood designs, SP losses. Not cheap. Not perfect but still a really useful book.

Using that book, (but going by memory!) you have an A.1 rating, ie. max. airflow requirements.... but these vary somewhat with the tank width/length ratio and presupposes a good fumehood design. Hence the airflows could range from 250 to 300 cfm per square foot of tank area.

Your airflow is slow, just ll5 fpm. The chemistry is potent. But I most sincerely hope that your tank is made of the right materials ... PVC:FRP would be my choice not any metal alloy.

I hope this helps you somewhat.
