How do you remove stains from non-stick cookware [Virginia]

Hello, It was great to find this site.

My wife had asked me a question about our non-stick cookware. She noticed that on the bottom of the fryer she saw what looks like grease stains possibly baked on, and wanted to know how to remove them since soap and water did not work alone. She did not want to use a scouring pad due to the fact that it will scratch the surface. Thus I ask you, do you have any suggestions?
