Turn brass house numbers to black

++++

I have some brass house address numbers that are old and dingy. I want to replace them with black metal numbers, but I can't find any that suit my needs. I remember back in school using a sulphur chemical to oxidize brass. What is the chemical (was it sulphur dioxide?) and will it turn brass black and hold it's blackness under outside weather conditions.

Thank you

The chemical you are looking for is liver of sulphur [Adv. St. Louis Crafts Liver Of Sulphur 4 oz. bottle ]. Brass requires lacquering whether it is blackened or unblackened, David.
