Removing heat treatment coating before cad plating
++++
WE ARE REQUIRED TO BRIGHT CADMIUM PLATE NEWLY MANUFACTURED BUSHINGS.
THESE ARE MADE FROM 17-4 AND 15-5 PH STEEL. THEY ARE HEAT TREATED TO 180 - 200 KSI.
THEY ACQUIRE AN OXIDE COATING FROM THE HEAT TREATMENT WHICH MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE THEY GET A NICKEL STRIKE.
CAN YOU SUGGEST A RELATIVELY SIMPLE APPROACH TO THIS SUCH AS AN IMMERSION DIP OR SUCH LIKE?

I can't say that I know the exact answer, Frank, but shouldn't you be looking at abrasive blasting rather than chemical pickling for this?

You have to comply with procedures from the OEM since you are doing aircraft work. You must live by approved methods and can not freelance unless you have OEM approved engineering change authority. Most aircraft MFG's would use a well maintained vacuum furnace which makes heat treat scale very minimal and normal processing should be adequate.
