Implant material

I believe that 316L stainless steel is the basic material for trauma implant products, bone screws, plates, etc. The main suppliers of the raw material quote versions of "purified" 316L such as Sandvik's 316VLM. Is there an industry standard which insists on this purified 316L or is basic 316 L acceptable?

316LS Stainless

A low carbon, high nickel and molybdenum version of Type 316 which is used for producing surgical implants. Meets the requirements of ASTM F138 [link is to spec at TechStreet] Grade 2, ASTM F139 Grade 2 and ISO 5832-1 Composition D.
