Stainless steel tanks for fruit washing corroded by 50 ppm chlorine [Australia]

+++

I am working with fruit processors who use 50 ppm chlorine solution to wash fruit. The tanks remain full all the time and I am concerned for the potential for corrosion during production, and when the tanks are idle with no agitation. Past experience has shown that such contact will cause corrosion of the stainless steel and I am wanting to advise the growers on the risk they face. Under these conditions what might be the life of the tank?

304 or 316 stainless will not work. Hastalloy C, or titanium are your best bets.

Titanium cladding or titanium lining or solid titanium are among the best choices. A lot of experience is accumulated up to now. Remember please that by using titanium you will have no problems as to detrimental effects of ion-release onto your food products. That is well-established fact.
