What does chromate conversion coating mean.
How is the typical thickness and hardness (compared to Al) of such coating.

Chromate is covered under Mil-C-5541 [link is to spec at TechStreet] f. It is a soft gel coating about 0.000 040 inch thick. Left bare the coating degrades at temp above 140 F. Under paint put it on thinner like 0.000 015 inch and paint over, then you may exceed 140 F to cure the paint.
