Lacquer removal on copper cookware [Michigan]

I have bought copper cookware and I have to remove the lacquer finish before I can use them. There were no instuctions on how to do this. Do I have to remove ALL the lacquer or just on the bottom of the pan. Any product on the market to remove it?
