Aluminium Motorcycle wheel treatment and care

+++

Hi!

I am an avid Harley Davidson fan and have a 11 month old V-Rod. Very pretty, but OH THOSE WHEELS! They are untreated cast aluminium solid disks and just cannot stand up to the vigours of an English winter (and the salt and chemicals those-that-are-in-power deem necessary to cover our roads with!)

I have removed the wheels twice so far and polished them with a number of proprietary cleaners and polishes, but the marks remain. WHat I would like to do is return them to just cast sparkle and then lacquer them - but I understand from all I speak with that this is an impossible task for the home d-i-yer to contemplate. Is this true? Will something like Alodine 1132 (I have been doing my homework!) prepare the surface adequately for a durable coat or two of lacquer...or will it all just disappear the next time I clean them?!

I really would appreciate some advice - even if it is "get rid of the wheels and buy some chromed ones, you idiot!"...! Cheers!
