I'm searching for a commercial spec. for clear zinc on steel bars and formed sheetmetal parts that would include thickness and cosmetic appearance.

Perhaps you want an electroplated zinc coating with a colorless chromate finish. See ASTM B-633 [link is to spec at TechStreet] -98e1 Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel, available from www.astm.org There are 4 zinc coating thicknesses as well as supplemental finishes (Type III is colorless chromate) from which to select. Re other cosmetic factors: "Defects in the surface of the basis metal, such as scratches, porosity, pits, inclusions" are not the responsibility of the plater (unless also the fabricator). Luster (bright, semi-bright or dull) should be agreed upon in advance and specified in the purchase order. Workmanship requirements specify uniformity of coating, etc.
