Tarnishing brass

How can I tarnish raw unlacquered brass quickly to an old dark looking finish ? I have tried clorox and amonium which works somewhat but it lacks the dark color that I am after.

I do not want to use a paint, just the brass itself with a deep dark finish.

Thanks in advance for any information that I might try.
