Etching on electropolished steelparts.

--

In our company we are experiencing big problems with etchings on steelparts which have been electropolished. Here is roughly what process the material goes through:

1: Steel parts are being cut into shape by CNC-machinery.

2: The parts are being degreased in alkaline solution.

3: Additional welding and cutting on the parts are performed.

4: Second time degreasing in alkaline solution.

5: Pickling in H2SO4/NaCl solution followed by electropolishing. ETCHING!!!

One of our puzzles to solve is that when the parts are being degreased in trichloroethylene we have no problems

Can anybody help me? I am a student and need to know what hazards are associated with welding alloys such as stainless steel and aluminium. Any information would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks... Regards Brodie
