Nickel onto pewter

I need to know if I can plate nickel on top of pewter. What plating needs to go first?

I don't see why not. However, 'pewter' used to mean a fairly specific alloy; today, since the emergence of lead-free pewter it doesn't seem to mean anything in particular.
