The Effects of Magnetic Particles on
Alloy Steel Fatigue Test Pieces [California]

Can Magnetic Particles have an effect on the fatigue properties of
alloy steel? Our fatigue tests prior to Magnetic Particle are 200,000
cycles. After Magnetic Particle and alkaline clean/degrease the
fatigue drops to about 80,000 cycles. We looked under a black light
and there are still some residual mag particles on the surface of the
test pieces. I guess the obvious question is to clean it completely
and then re-test. Acetone [link is to product info at Rockler]
seems to remove all of the particles but we have not tested samples
after such cleaning. What is a good cleaning method for removing mag
oil and particles prior to plating?
