Rx needed for dishwasher sick stainless steel

++

Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated:

I have a pair of cake servers that are of sentimental value(silver handles, stainless steel "knife" section) that I lent to a friend. She said she washed them in the dishwasher and they came back with the "knife" section completely discolored. She can't remember what she washed them with, or what detergent was used. The dark stains look to be both on the surface in some spots, and what sort of looks like a heat spot in others. Although I have been able to lessen the discoloration with a 5% Oxalic Acid [linked by editor to product info at Rockler] product, it still looks pretty terrible. Any ideas on what might have happened, and what I may be able to do to restore them?

Thanks!
