Preserving and whitening seastars

++

I found some seastars on the beach after a storm. To preserve them I've soaked them in 70% alcohol overnight. That turned them stiff and took away the smell as well. But they look greyish and dull. How can I make them look really white like those on sale in shops? If I'd like to dye them into different colors, what kind of dye should I use?

Thanks a lot for helping.
