Chemical needed to anodize or oxidize copper to a black color

++

I would like to know if there is a chemical that a lay person could use at home to anodize or turn copper or brass to a black color. This is strictly on a home use or hobbyists concern. Thank you for your time.

I think you might be using a slightly wrong word in saying "anodize", Barry; to my knowledge it is not possible to anodize copper or brass. Please look up 'patina' instead (right on this site, even), and I think you'll get some answers. Good luck.
