COATING OF OIL FIELD TOOLS [Canada]

Dear Sirs,

I own a oil-field machine-shop. Could you please inform me if there is any type of hot chemical coatings for finished parts 'various metals' used in the oilpatch 4140 steel to stainless steel with anti corrosion and galling properties.

I would appreciate any help given.

Thanking you,

There are loads of different finishes used on oilfield equipment, for instance, Copper plating on premium threads (box end) manufactured from duplex stainless and nickel alloys. Manganese phosphate on carbon steels, Bonded molykotes and xylans. Paint systems on Christmas tree assemblies. High Phosphorous electroless nickel on ball valves etc, hard chrome on mud motor screws. Generally the design authority for a particular piece of equipment specifies the finish to be applied. If you are a repair shop I would have thought the original manufacturer would specify the finish to be applied after repair. If you are designing and manufacturing your own tools perhaps you could be a bit more specific and somebody may be able to point in the right direction.

Several companies have decided to use coatings that have proven themselves over time, abandoning copper for other metal thinfilm (Thickfilm) coatings.
