Brick Stripping (external)

I own a federation villa with front external brick and sandstone. The brick has been painted with both red oxide paint underneath and external household paint on top of the red oxide. I would like to strip off the paint and then repoint but have tried a number of products. the best product that worked was sodium hydroxide (paint stripper @ acid worked poorly).

Is this the best way to go and what will the hydroxide do to the sandstone. What are the best steps to take?? The house is 93 years old and we want to return it to its natural state without ruining any of the sandstone.

Thanks,
