Thin Colored Coatings on Steel

I am a semi-retired electrical engineer looking for someone to show me how to produce a thin, durable, colored finish on small steel parts for identification. I am looking for a finish similar to that on some steel aerosol cans which are very thin and practically indestructible. I am not interested in graphics or excellent appearances but in about a dozen different, bright colors for identification.

Thanks,
