Best steel type for galvanizing?

Q. Dear sir ,

I want to attain a coating of 127 microns on hot rolled steel sheets of 4 mm thickness. Suggest please the steel composition (operating temperature of the zinc kettle- 445 °C, and bath is prepared from special high grade zinc, and aluminium is added up to .005 percent).

A. Hi, S.R. Bill is of course right that the purpose of the galvanizing is to add corrosion resistance to the steel -- so the tail is sort of wagging the dog if you try to tailor the steel to the needs of the galvanizing process.

But high silicon content is known to reduce galvanizing thickness, so if you want high thickness, you want low silicon steel (see thread 776). You may also wish to see threads 18653, and 48734. Good luck.
