Mechanism of gas nitriding process (hardening process)

my name is A.sivakumar, I am working as an Assistant Foreman in electroplating shop and heat treatment process shop.

In our factory we are manufacturing heavy vehicles engine parts. specifically In the cylinder liners (stainless steel) some specified areas coated with TIN metal for prevention of nitriding process. While doing nitriding process, temperature is maintained between 500° C to 545° C. Here we use ammonia this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] gas for nitriding process. Tin metal melting point is 232*C. Kindly explain:

1. how the nitriding process happens?
2. explain the mechanism?
